(Continuing the discussion of Marcus Icke's artistic rendition
of the blurry blob labeled "Flight 11" by the world's media.)
|
We're told by many people that the reason that Flight 11, as captured by
the Naudet brothers, looks blurry as it
flies into the North Tower is because of its speed. Leonard Spencer, in an email to
this author, writes:
The blistering speed was in fact around 470 mph (top estimate). This is
equivalent to 230 yards per second. In 1/60th of a second the plane will
have travelled a little under four yards. This means that Marcus's plane may
appear a little too long and its wings and tail a little too chunky. It doesn't
mean [Marcus] is conjuring
something out of nothing (Leonard Spencer).
(This author is told that Eric Salter, of whom at this writing it is claimed is a
"video editor with 11 years of experience", supports Spencer's view about the
reason that Flight 11 is so blurry.)
Unfortunately, Spencer is ignoring a
fundamental principle
of cinematic presentation. While Flight 11 certainly can appear blurry in individual
frames, it should appear acceptably in focus when
viewing the succession of frames as intended. We should
see a focused plane when we view the clip at (or above) 18 frames per second because at that
rate the human mind begins to be fooled into thinking static images are really
animated.
Still, when we watch "Flight 11" striking the North Tower in the
Naudet film clip it appears out of focus throughout. If this
were possible there would be no cinema!

(If Icke and Salter's view were correct,
there could be no video clip of a rocket where the rocket was actually in focus. However,
most of us have seen rockets and other objects flying past the 470 m.p.h. that
Spencer states that Flight 11 was flying. These objects were in
focus even as they moved at very high speeds.)

(If Icke and Salter are correct, every drummer's drumstick on MTV should be out of focus. However,
while individual frames of the drummer are clearly out of focus, the clip itself
is not.)
